When you get a lot of fish when fishing, of course you won't eat all of the fish, there must be a lot of leftovers and purposely to take home as souvenirs. Therefore you must have a trick to keep the fish for the souvenir fresh, not damaged or smell bad.

How To Keep Fish Alive On A Fishing Trip

Has it ever occurred to you that the fish that has been caught can stay alive during a fishing trip even until you get home? It turns out that this can happen by doing one of the following great methods:

  • 1. Put the fish on the strings and put it back in the water on condition that the fish are not injured or bleeding so they don't become prey for predatory fish.
  • 2. Put the Fish in the floating net basket
  • 3. Put the caught fish immediately in a live well that can hold all your Fish, separate by type of fish, and don't put injured fish together.
  • 4. Put the fish in a cooler filled with water and ice

Keeping Fish Alive Using a Stringer

The step that must be done is you tie a rope to the side of the boat or kayak and then insert the stringer needle through the fish's bottom mouth and out of the mouth. This way the fish will stay in the water and stay alive and swimming. Never insert the stringer through the gills as this will hinder the performance of the gills and stress the fish. Because the function of the gills is to filter oxygen when the fish breathes, if the system is disturbed, the fish can suffocate and die.

To practice the method above, then you can make simple DIY equipment with the following objects

1 x 7 inch long PVC with a 1 inch diameter
1 x drill bit that is 2 mm in diameter larger than the diameter of your string needle
1 x drill
1 x measuring tape

  • Step 1. Drill a 2 inch hole from the left of the pipe.
  • Step 2. Drill a hole almost an inch from the right of the pipe.
  • Step 3. Insert the stringer needle through the hole on the left.
  • Step 4. Insert the stringer needle through the hole on the right so that both ends of the string are facing you.
  • Step 5. Take the stringer needle and thread it into the open end on the right side of the pipe, lengthwise.
  • Step 6. Remove the slack from the string to secure the stringer needle in place.

The advantage of using these methods and tools is that you can easily add your catch and tie it with a stringer through the bottom of the mouth and out of the fish's mouth without bothering with any knots and you can save a lot of fish using this simple tool.

Keeping Fish Alive Using Floating Net Baskets

Using floating net baskets is an effective way to keep caught fish alive. There are two options for this floating net basket, namely one with a cover or one without a cover. The function is the same, but a floating net basket with a lid is certainly safer because you don't worry about the fish that have been put in will jump and return to the sea. With this tool you will easily enter the fish and of course the fish will stay alive even for a long time. You also don't have to bother separating the types of fish, as long as there are no bloody fish you can put them all into the basket. We recommend that fish that are injured and bleeding are not included with healthy fish, because it is feared that predatory fish will eat them.

Using Live Wells

For the third method, this might be a little inconvenient for you because you need to prepare the following equipment:

  1. A large container in the form of a well or tub
  2. Filling water into the tub
  3. Turning on the aerator that functions for oxygen circulation
  4. Providing fish, especially when you are fishing will be long.
  5. You have to replace the water with new water if you see that the water starts to get dirty and smells of ammonia
  6. The aeration and recirculation system must continue to work, because if the aerator is off, the fish will lack oxygen, suffocate and die and eventually you will lose because a lot of fish caught dead.

How to Preserve Fish to Keep it Fresh

The trick is that first you put a layer of shaved ice at the bottom of the cooler, then place the fish regularly on the ice sheet, then cover the pile of fish with another layer of shaved ice. Keep doing it over and over until the cooler is full and make sure the top layer is shaved ice with a thick layer. Also make sure the fish has ice on all sides and is completely covered.

Method of Brine Ice Porridge

This method is more practical and easier than the previous method. First you prepare a box or container that has a lid. Add cold water plus salt. Next, pour a bag of ice into the saltwater box and put the fish in it and then cover the box. With these two methods, the dead fish will be kept fresh, durable and not rotten.
